Santtu Rouvali

Santtu-Matias Rouvali began his percussion studies privately with Jorma Alanne in Lahti, in 1991. He entered the Lahti Conservatory of Music the following year. He was admitted to the Youth Department of the Sibelius Academy in 2003 where he studied with Olli-Pekka Martikainen. Other teachers have included Pasi Suomalainen and also Christian Martinez, with whom he has been studying periodically in Denmark since he was 15 years old. In 2004 he was admitted to the Graduate program in percussion
performance, and later that same year, he was chosen to represent Finland at the young soloist competition in Luzerne.

Mr. Rouvali has performed in different orchestras and ensembles. In 2007 he was admitted to the Orchestral Conducting program with Leif Segerstam as his teacher. Conducting is now his main subject of studies.
